About Onyx

Onyx is a Sprinter 170. The build came together well enough that we've turned the layout into one of our spec options.

The client is an ultramarathon runner. The week before she picked the van up she finished the Cocodona 250, which tells you most of what this build had to be. Tough enough to keep up with the kind of trips she puts her body through. Comfortable enough to feel like home when the running was done.

The wet bath is 32 inches wide with an infinity shower. Heated floors run on a hydronic loop that ties into hot water and cabin heat, so one system warms the bed at the end of a long day and the shower at the start of the next one.

All the water lives inside the van. Fresh tank, grey tank, every plumbing run, all of it enclosed and protected. Nothing exposed underneath that could freeze and crack. The grey is insulated and heated alongside the fresh, which means she can run four-season without winterizing the system every time the forecast drops.

Power was built for long stretches off-grid. 800 Ah of Victron lithium. 400 W of solar on the roof. A 280-amp secondary alternator refills the bank fast while she's driving. A Victron 3000 W inverter handles the AC side, and the Cerbo GX touchscreen runs the whole stack from one panel.

Two Van Equipped jump seats sit on a SafeTrack rail. In for passengers and a packed weekend. Out for gear, race-day supplies, and the floor space to load it all.

The pull-up bar on the roof rack came in custom because she still needed somewhere to train between races. Even when the trails were a long walk away, she could get her workout from the side of the van.

The bones underneath are built for the weight. Van Compass Opti-Rate leaf springs hold the rear at the right height under a heavy load. A Van Compass Stage 1 shock kit smooths what the springs cannot. Rolling on Owl Talon 17-inch wheels with upgraded Nitto Terra Grapplers for the trails she will actually drive.

The exterior is built for hard miles. An Owl Vans Ridgeline bumper protects the front, with matching skid plates covering the underside. At the back, an Explorer tire carrier and ladder handle the spare and the climb. The Monster 40 box swallows whatever gear does not fit anywhere else. A Van Compass rear tug step underneath. A Curious Campervans roof rack overhead, carrying the custom pull-up bar.

She is almost as tough as her owner. She'll be there for every step of every race.
