The Fortepiano Tour Van is a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 170 custom conversion built by 2Pines Upfitters in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, for a world-renowned fortepianist who tours North America performing concerts and teaching. It is a working van first: a place to sleep, cook, and work between dates, with a full-width rear cargo bay for the gear that travels with a touring musician.

The Story

Touring as a fortepianist is not like touring with a guitar. The schedule runs through concert halls and university music departments scattered across North America, and the drives between them are long. This van had to be the green room, the office, and the bed between dates, with everything reachable after a late load-out and an early start the next morning.

The layout works like a small backstage. Two facing benches run down the middle with a full-width table that folds away when it is time to drive, so there is a real surface for desk work, meals, or going over a score. The galley carries a drawer fridge, a range with an oven, a stainless sink, and butcher block counters, with a SeeLevel II monitor keeping tabs on the tanks. The bed rides on a platform at the back, above the part of the van that earns its keep.

That part is the full-width rear cargo bay: padded load floor, hinged access panel, sized for the cases and gear that follow a working musician from city to city. Load through the back doors, latch the panel, drive. And the snow in these photos is not staged. The van was built in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, where winter takes up most of the calendar, and a touring schedule does not get to wait for spring.
