Dixie · Ford Transit 148
Full custom
Dixie is a full custom camper van conversion on a Ford Transit 148 extended-length chassis, built by 2Pines Upfitters in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. It runs a 300Ah lithium battery bank through a Victron MultiPlus 2000W inverter, with 335W of solar on an MPPT controller, DC-DC alternator charging, and a Victron Cerbo touchscreen watching over all of it. A 35-gallon fresh water tank, an Isotherm Spa water heater, and a gasoline air heater cover the comforts, while a queen bed and a dinette that converts to a second bed cover the sleeping. The brief was a bright, simple van with everything you need and nothing you don't.
The Story
Dixie started with a short brief from its owners: everything you need and nothing you don't. That sounds easy until you try to fit a kitchen, a toilet, two sleeping areas, and a real off-grid power system into a Ford Transit and still keep the space feeling open. We leaned on white cabinet faces, hardwood counters, and Broad Arrow windows down both sides to keep the light moving through this gray Transit, and every system that made the cut had to earn its spot.
The off-grid package is the quiet workhorse here. A 300Ah lithium battery bank feeds a Victron MultiPlus 2000W inverter, with 335 watts of solar through an MPPT controller and DC-DC alternator charging topping things up while you drive. A Victron Cerbo touchscreen puts the whole system on one display, so you always know what is coming in and what is going out. Water runs from a 35-gallon fresh tank through an Isotherm Spa water heater, and because the Transit runs on gasoline, the air heater draws from the same fuel supply as the engine. One fuel to manage instead of two.
The living space is where the dual-purpose thinking shows. A queen bed anchors the back of the van, and the dinette up front does double duty as a second bed when company comes along. The galley runs an induction cooktop, a deep sink, and an ICECO dual-zone chest fridge, with a Lagun table that swings into place wherever the meal happens to be. Outside, a Flatline Van Co roof rack and slide-out gear tray carry the bulky stuff, a Fiamma awning makes shade on demand, 360-degree campsite lighting saves you from fumbling around after dark, and SumoSprings with a Van Compass ride improvement package keep the whole thing composed on washboard gravel.
